Tourist Attractions In Hoima

1. Mparo Tombs

Located about 3 miles from Hoima town, the tombs are the burial place of the Kings of Bunyoro Kingdom and their other immediate relatives. Most notable is the tomb of the most famous King of Bunyoro, Kabalega, who had several fierce battles with Buganda Kingdom and rejected the British colonial rule for a long time. Inside the traditional shelters of the tombs are also the regalia and important instruments used by various former Kings.

2. Kibiro Hot Springs and Salt Gardens
Kibiro Hot Springs and Salt Gardens are found 35 kilometers north of Hoima town, within the Western Rift Valley, at the shores of Lake Albert.

Besides the experience with hot springs and harvesting and traditional processing of salt, the site offers opportunity for future development of water sports and sun bathing at the white sand beaches of the area. However, the unfortunate situation of possible existence of bilhazia warms in the waters needs to be gradually rectified through improved hygiene within Kibiro and neighbouring areas.

Kibiro also offers one of the best opportunities in the country for hill and rock hiking.

3. Katasiha Fort and Caves
The Katasiha Fort and Caves are located about 3 kilometers from Hoima town. The site was a Fort of former King Kabalega of Bunyoro.

The main attraction of the site is the impressive defensive trenches and caves constructed for various purposes.

Although currently unattended to the site has potential for attracting visitors, once improved on, as it is easily accessible.

4. Lugard’s Fort at Kyangwale
This is located 80 kilometers from Hoima town. The site is of national significance.

When improved on, the site will add to the diversity of tourism products for the heritage trails.

5. Bulindi Eco-Tourism Project
The Project is one of the important potential attractions in the district. The Eco-Tourism site is home to over 30 Chimpazees, under habituation by the surrounding local community, in the remaining part of a previously large natural forest. The forest is located about 17 kilometres from Hoima town.

The attraction offers rare opportunity for Chimpazee viewing, by visitors to Hoima. Although having a lot of potential, the community based project requires some technical support, particularly on the way forward, as the numbers of the Chimpazees are growing rapidly.

6. Buseruka Escarpment
The area is located about 45 kilometres north-west of Hoima town. The long steep slope separates Lake Albert and the adjacent Hoima mainland areas.

The green valley, cliffs, sandy Lake shores and other features associated with the western rift valley effects, are attractive for trail walks and camping.

7. Tonya Wildlife Reserve
The Reserve is situated about 70 kilometres north-west of Hoima town. The Reserve belongs to Hoima district local Government and covers much of Kabwoya and Nkonde Sub-Counties.

The area is home to various primate, antelope and various bird species. Given the poor accessibility, the area is still only of local significance.

8. Crafts
Some sensitisation to women groups and the youth have through the Church have promoted production of crafts and souvenirs for sale, by households. Potential exists for production of the items in a sustainable manner.

9. Hotel and Catering
During the survey conducted in 2001, the district had 16 accommodation establishments, with a capacity of 372 beds and 225 rooms. African Tourist Village and Hoima Kolping House in Hoima town were most outstanding for upper class visitors to Hoima.
