Tourist Atrractions In Lira

1.         Lakes Kwania and Kyoga

The lakes areas comprise open water surface, swampy papyrus shores and sandy landing sites.  The potential attractions include fishing villages, canoeing, angling, bird watching and community tourism.  It is possible to develop resort/picnic campsites and other hotel establishments at the shore areas.  

2.         Wetlands (Kyoga, Dokolo and Erute counties)

The wetlands in the counties of Kyoga, Dokolo and Erute are habitat to a number of bird species and the bird watching activity can be developed and incorporated into one of the attractions for visitors to Lira.   

Agricultural tourism if developed at the Orweny rice scheme in Dokolo County could add to the variety of tourism products within Lira district.

3.         Gwata forest plantation

The forest provides opportunity for nature/forest walks.  The forest when combined with other attractions such community/market visits could facilitate development of some eco-tourism.

4.         Historical sites / Antiquities

The district has only a few historical sites of national significance.  The key one is the site where the Kings of Bunyoro and Buganda; Kabalega and Mwanga, respectively, were arrested, in Dokolo County

5.         Scenery viewing

There are a number of scenic areas which are unique to Lira district and could become of national significance.  These are: the Inselbergs at Ngeta and the monotonous shear tree vegetation in Otuke County.  The rocky hills in the municipality provide good scenery of Lira town and beyond.

6.         Sporting activities

Lira is one of the few towns in the Country with a sizeable Golf course.  The pitch has been preserved albeit urban construction pressures.  The sport already attracts the sports fraternity to visit Lira for days.  More infrastructures such as swimming pools and tennis courts require to be developed to promote both domestic and international tourism to the area.

7.         Hotel and Catering

The hotel and catering services of the district are also developed only to the extent of satisfying local demand and transit travellers’ needs. 

Although Lira town has a total capacity of 2,000 beds, the town has two hotels that would pass for middle class tourist facilities, namely; White House Hotel and Lira Hotel.  Both these hotels have a total capacity of only 100 beds.
