Tourist Atractions in Tororo

Tororo Rock
Tororo rock is located close to Tororo, the main town of the district. The rock which stands out prominently and is seen when 50 Kilometres away, is currently being exploited for rock climbing, cable car rides, camping and scenery viewing.

In particular, the installation of the cable car and a picnic site has enhanced further development of tourism activities at the Tororo rock.

Potential further exists for establishing the camp sites and excursion parks at the rock, overlooking much of Tororo, Mbale and Busia districts.

Antiquities/Historical sites
Tororo district has a number of historical sites, which are of local and national importance. These sites include Nagiriga cultural site for Badama tribe in memory of the brutal tribal wars between Banyankole and Badama in the nineteenth century. The area was the burial site for Banyole killed during the battles. The site is near a rock with cave used as safe haven during wars.

Busitema and Bubuhe forests
Although previously encroached on, NEMA and the local authorities have taken steps to evict most of the encroachers which has given chance to recovery of the eco-diversity within the forests. Flora previously degraded are now regenerating and game populations including primates are recovering.

Current tourism potential includes viewing of the De-braza monkeys and statungas in Amonikakineye forest (branch of Busistema Forest). Other potential tourism activities are: bird watching, nature walks, forest walks and community guided walks.

Nakwiga wetland and Osukuru bird sanctuary
Nakwiga wetland and Osukuru bird sanctuary have been protected by local authorities and NEMA from degradation. Both the wetland and the gazetted bird sanctuary in Osukuru County are seasonally home to rare migratory bird species.

Potential exists for development of the two areas into bird watching attractions.

River Mpologoma
River Mpologoma is a tributary of Lake Kyoga and traverses the districts of Tororo, Iganga and Pallisa. In the Tororo area at Iyolwa, the river offers opportunity for viewing hippopotamuses and crocodiles at close range in the shallow and muddy waters. Both types of animals are migratory along the river but chances of seeing them are highest during the dry season.

Iyolwa site for viewing the hippopotamuses and crocodiles is an expansive open marshland suitable for excursions during the dry season. However, the way to the site at Iyolwa is a small bushy path used by fishermen and requires clearance to enhance tourism in the district.

Crafts and Souvenirs
Papyrus is the dominant vegetation in the wetlands of Tororo. This and other natural materials such as palm leaves can be used to initiate sustainable programs for the crafts and souvenir industry. Hisilo “Islands” have significant potential for the crafts and souvenir industry.

Malaba Port
Malaba Port is one of the two most important entry and exit points for passenger traffic, including tourists transiting and to or fro Kenya.

The Port suffered neglect in areas of physical planning and environmental management over decades of the Country’s misrule, which has rendered it unattractive for any cross-border tourism, other than merely serving as an official immigration and customs point.

Improvements in infrastructure and environment management at the Port would catalyse tourism related activities in the area.

Community Tourism
Community tourism potential in Tororo district would involve visiting communities to experience their life styles and culture, visiting community markets and viewing cultural performances. Potential of community tourism in Tororo is enhanced by the numerous tribes found in the district.

Hotel and Catering
The district had a total capacity of about 650 beds. The large bed capacity is attributed to the multitudes of low grade accommodation establishments intended for business travellers who often require night stop-over in the area.

The outstanding accommodation establishments in Tororo district include Rock View Hotel and Port SpringVilla.
